Carriage and Tool Inserts

Our new carriage is a Quick Change Artist.  It can change directions or change tools in under 8 seconds, faster than any other panel cutting machine.

The new carriage was originally made to accept a saw insert that would allow the saw to rotate without being removed from the carriage. With this insert, two pins are pulled and the saw is rotated 90 degrees. The saw direction can be changed in 2-3 seconds. Our standard saw insert must be removed, turned 90 degrees and reinserted.  This process takes about 6 seconds. The new saw insert is a little faster and easier than our standard carriage insert.  It allows our customers the option to upgrade their machine and still use the router or knife inserts.

The new redesigned carriage has two other advantages.

First, the size of every tool insert needed to be larger to match the size of the larger rotating saw insert plate.  By making the standard saw insert plate larger, bigger saws would fit in the carriage.  Now a 10" Milwaukee saw can be attached and by using taller guide tube support brackets, the depth of cut can be increased to over 2.5 inches.    Also, the longer European saws with their built in riving knives can be attached to the standard carriage.  This opens up the European market for our panel cutting machines.  Finally, the most powerful hand held circular saw, a new Bosch 15 amp. worm drive, can be used with the larger saw insert plate.

The second advantage has to do with the redesigned method of attaching the tool insert.  The new carriage has a bottom lip that the insert edge fits into.  As the insert is rotated  into the carriage from the bottom lip, two aligning pins in the carriage fit through holes in the insert and assure exact alignment.  Two spring loaded pins that can be locked up with a ¼ turn, are attached to the top edge of the carriage.  While the insert is in the carriage, the pins are lowered into the holes in the insert.  This prevents the insert from rotating out of the carriage.

To change an insert, one would pull up and rotate the two spring loaded pins on the top of  the carriage.  The insert would then be rotated forward out of the carriage.  A new insert is attached by reversing this process.  There are no knobs or fasteners to drop, screw or loose.  The tool change process takes less than 8 seconds.
